The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for an “immediate reversal” of the recent hike in petrol prices across the country. This demand was made public through a post on the NLC’s official X page on Tuesday night, where the union stated, “We demand the immediate reversal of the latest increase in the pump price of PMS across the country.”
Earlier in the day, the NLC expressed deep disappointment with President Bola Tinubu following the announcement by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) that the official price of petrol had been raised from ₦617 to ₦897 per litre. The union feels this increase goes against the understanding they had with the government, particularly in light of their acceptance of a ₦70,000 minimum wage.
Joe Ajaero, the president of the NLC, voiced the union’s sense of betrayal over the price hike, emphasizing that the agreement to the minimum wage was based on the assurance that there would be no further increases in fuel prices. Ajaero warned that the NLC is prepared to take action in response to this development. He stated that in the coming days, the relevant bodies within the Congress will convene to discuss and decide on the appropriate course of action, with their decisions to be announced publicly.
The NLC’s demand for a price reversal highlights the growing tension between the union and the government over economic issues affecting the country, particularly in relation to fuel prices, which have a significant impact on the cost of living for Nigerians.
