Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, referred to the ongoing price dispute between Dangote Refinery and the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) as a “skit” on Thursday. His remarks followed the Federal Government’s decision not to step in and mediate the pricing conflict between the two entities.
Earlier, on Wednesday, the Federal Government clarified its position, stating that it would remain neutral in the petrol price standoff between NNPCL and Dangote Refinery. Bayo Onanuga, the spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu, explained that both parties were free to set their own fuel prices based on market conditions.
Onanuga emphasized that the deregulation of the petroleum sector means that stakeholders have the freedom to operate within the boundaries of market forces, allowing them to determine pricing independently. This move aligns with the government’s stance on maintaining a competitive market environment without direct interference.
In response to this development, Sani expressed his views on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. He stated, “Now that the FG will not intervene in the price war between Dangote and the NNPCL shows that ‘the war’ is a skit.”

Sani’s comments reflect a level of skepticism toward the seriousness of the pricing dispute, implying that the rivalry between the two major players in the petroleum industry may be more theatrical than substantial.
