The President of Nigeria’s Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has called on the Chinese government to increase its support for Africa, particularly Nigeria. He made this appeal on Tuesday while hosting a Chinese delegation led by Zhang Qingwei, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of China’s National People’s Congress (NPC).
Akpabio described Zhang’s visit—his first to Africa—as a significant event, full of potential for stronger ties between Nigeria and China. Speaking to the delegation, Akpabio emphasized the need for increased aid, pointing out that China’s pledge to Africa under the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) has declined compared to the $60 billion committed in 2015.
“As China’s trade relationship with Africa continues to grow,” Akpabio stated, “I urge the Chinese government to increase its aid to Nigeria. Beyond trade, we must focus on partnerships that will strengthen our economies while fostering cultural and social connections.”
The Senate President expressed a desire for both nations to work together on impactful projects that would transform lives and contribute to modernization. He described Nigeria as a country rich in resources and culture, urging China to see the nation not just as a market but as a hub for innovation and endless opportunities.
Akpabio highlighted the progress made through recent diplomatic engagements between Nigeria and China, including significant trade growth and multiple Memoranda of Understanding. However, he stressed the importance of boosting cooperation between the legislatures of both countries.
“Our parliaments have a lot to learn from each other. China’s National People’s Congress, with nearly 3,000 members, is a model of political organization, while Nigeria’s bicameral legislature can offer unique insights,” he said. Akpabio proposed the establishment of a Nigeria-China Parliamentary Friendship Group to foster the exchange of ideas and deepen ties.
Zhang Qingwei, speaking earlier, explained that the visit was part of efforts to build on agreements reached between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during Tinubu’s recent visit to China. He said the aim was to strengthen China-Nigeria relations, deepen legislative cooperation, and elevate bilateral ties. Zhang expressed China’s goodwill and hope for Nigeria’s continued growth and reform.
