Comrade Patrick Aidam, Personal Assistant to the Deputy Leader of the Akamkpa Legislative Council, has resigned from his position, citing threats to his life, the safety of his family, and the destruction of his community, Iko Esai.
In a press briefing on Thursday, February 27, Aidam alleged that the Executive Chairman of Akamkpa LGA, Hon. Felix Akposi KSJI, has failed to address escalating violence in the community, which he claims has resulted in deaths, destruction of property, and displacement of residents.
According to him, since February 9, 2025, Iko Esai has been under attack, with houses, vehicles, and cocoa farms burned while security agencies remain inactive. He further accused the chairman of shielding the perpetrators of these crimes while targeting victims, including the Clan Head of Iko Esai, Chief Obio Arong Owai, who remains in detention despite suffering personal losses in the crisis.
“I am not safe. My life is in danger,” Aidam declared, explaining that his resignation was necessary for his survival.
Reacting to the allegations and resignation, the Executive Chairman of Akamkpa LGA, Hon. Felix Akposi KSJI refuted the allegations, describing Aidam as a key figure in the conflict rather than a victim. According to the chairman, the crisis began on February 9 after an anonymous warning about potential unrest. By February 10, a young man, Christian Abakum Ijenga, was shot dead, and widespread destruction followed.
Akposi stated that he promptly deployed security personnel and facilitated police investigations, leading to the arrest of factional leaders, including Chief Owai Obio Arong and Chief Elijah Okom Esira. However, he accused Aidam of attempting to politicize the issue and fueling retaliatory attacks instead of cooperating with law enforcement.
“It is deeply regrettable that Patrick Aidam, in a desperate bid to hide his role in the crisis, is spreading falsehoods and inciting further discord,” the chairman stated.
He emphasized that his administration remains committed to peace and stability, dismissing claims that he was orchestrating the removal of the Clan Head of Iko Esai.
The crisis in Iko Esai has left many residents displaced and fearful for their safety. Reports indicate that victims who fled the area remain unable to return due to security concerns. Meanwhile, the conflict has further exposed deep-seated political and communal tensions in Akamkpa LGA, raising urgent questions about governance, security, and accountability in the region.
