Calabar, Cross River State – The city of Calabar is set to come alive on Saturday, April 19, 2025, with the hosting of the Calabar Marathon, a major sporting event aimed at promoting tourism, healthy living, and youth engagement in Cross River State. The marathon with the theme: Run for Development and Peace, which will commence at 6:00 a.m., is expected to follow the famous Calabar Carnival Route, giving participants a taste of the city’s scenic and cultural landmarks.

The announcement was made during a press conference held at the Cross River State Tourism Bureau Office in Calabar. According to the Commissioner for Youths Development, Barr. Odum Ijom Ukam, a significant number of young people from across the state have been mobilized to take part in the marathon. The event is seen as a way to channel youthful energy into something positive, and preparations have been made to ensure wide participation. In addition to the runners, several notable dignitaries and government officials are also expected to take part, further elevating the profile of the event.

Earlier in his remark, the Managing Director of the Tourism Bureau, Mr. Ojoi Ekpenyong, mentioned that the marathon is designed as a strategic move to stimulate economic development in the state. It is also in line with the state government’s “People’s First” mantra, aimed at placing the welfare of citizens at the forefront of every initiative.

He noted that as part of the incentives to attract competitive participation, the first prize winner of the marathon will walk away with a ₦1 million cash prize, with other prizes also up for grabs for top finishers, emphasizing the importance of using the event to drive local economic activity, attract tourism, and give visibility to the state’s commitment to sports and youth development.

The press conference was attended by other top government officials, including the Special Adviser on General Duties to the Governor, Barr. Ekpenyong Akiba, the Project Manger of Calabar Marathon, Mr. Charlz Ada, the State Adviser on Hospitality, Mr. Albert Kusi, representative of the Cross River State Commissioner of Police, reps of various MDAs, amongst others, who expressed their support for the initiative, pointing out that events like the marathon are essential to showcasing Cross River as a hub for hospitality and tourism.

Organizers have assured the public of adequate logistics, including medical support, and security presence along the route to ensure the safety and comfort of all participants.

The Calabar Marathon 2025 is expected to attract not only residents of Cross River but also visitors from other parts of Nigeria, setting the stage for what promises to be one of the most vibrant sports tourism events in the region.
