The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River State Council, Archibong Bassey, has launched an initiative called PADBANK to help end period poverty and support teenage girls and women in rural communities.
The project was introduced during activities to mark the 2025 World Humanitarian Day at Adiabo Ikot Mbo Otu in Odukpani Local Government Area. It is self-funded and targets the distribution of 80,000 sanitary pads across 12 rural communities this year.
Speaking at the launch, Bassey said the idea came after hearing painful stories from girls who struggle to afford basic menstrual hygiene products. According to her, PADBANK is not just about giving out sanitary pads but about restoring dignity, protecting health, and ensuring girls do not miss school because of their periods. She called on NGOs, faith-based organizations, and individuals to partner with the initiative so that it can reach more communities.
Ukoroebi Essien, Public Relations Officer of PADBANK, described menstrual health as a basic right that every girl and woman deserves. He explained that when young girls lack access to menstrual care, they lose confidence, miss school, and in some cases drop out entirely, which has long-term effects on their future and the society at large.
Community leaders at the event praised the project and pledged their support. The launch ended with free distribution of sanitary pads to schoolgirls and women in the community, many of whom expressed gratitude and relief at the gesture.
