Aliko Dangote has sealed a major deal with the Ethiopian government to build a fertiliser production plant worth $2.5 billion in the Gode region of Ethiopia’s Somali state. Under the agreement, Dangote’s company will hold a 60 percent stake while Ethiopian Investment Holdings (EIH) will own 40 percent.
Once completed, the plant expected to take around 40 months will be capable of producing 3 million metric tonnes of fertiliser annually. It will connect to the Calub and Hilala natural gas fields via pipeline, aiming to reduce the country’s reliance on imports and relieve foreign exchange pressure.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed described the project as transformative, saying it will boost job creation, secure fertiliser supply for farmers, and pave the way toward food sovereignty.
Dangote expressed that the partnership aligns with a shared ambition to industrialise Africa and strengthen food security across the continent.
