In a statement issued from Warri, Comrade Israel Joe, president of the De-Advocates for Justice Human Rights Organisation, has urged Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to halt what he describes as a personal vendetta against activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore.
Comrade Joe warned that in solidarity with other civil society groups, they would stage a protest by occupying the courtroom on the day of Sowore’s hearing to ensure justice is either served or the people’s collective resolve is clearly asserted.
He accused the IGP of abusing the judicial process to stifle dissenting voices, particularly targeting Sowore, who is known as a nationalist, Pan-African journalist, and businessman. “This is the same tactic of the ruling elite to suppress individuals like Comrade Omoyele Sowore through counterproductive litigation,” Joe said.
Referencing his own experience, Joe noted that he faced similar treatment by the Delta State police during the #EndHarshipProtest, where officers demanded to review his financial records. After hours in custody, no evidence was found.
