The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has introduced new limits on social gatherings on campus after a deadly incident. The school has banned all social events that extend past 6:00 p.m. This rule change follows the death of a guest during a student event on September 12. The victim was Chiebonam Nweze, also known as Power-Autos. He attended a bonfire night hosted by the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies. He was stabbed to death.
The statement announcing the new directive was signed by Inya Egwu, Acting Public Relations Officer at UNN. Management says social functions must now occur only during daylight hours and must have supervision by the University Security Unit. University officials say they found that the event that led to the tragedy was infiltrated by people from a nearby community who caused violence.
The UNN leadership described the killing as tragic and called the event avoidable. They said the change in policy aims to strengthen safety and reduce chances of similar events happening again. They assured students, staff, and visitors that they are working to secure all parts of campus. They believe the new limits will ensure that social life on campus remains safe while allowing necessary functions to take place.
UNN said public security is a top priority. The university will continue to take steps to prevent future harm. Social events such as parties, meetings, and other gatherings must obey the new rules or risk refusal. The plan is to maintain a safer university environment for everyone connected to the institution.
