The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken action against two Chinese supermarkets in Abuja, shutting them down for dealing in unregistered and illegal items. The operation also extended to eight cosmetics shops, which were found offering expired products and goods without proper documentation.
During the enforcement exercise, NAFDAC agents confiscated a wide range of products. Among them were Wenicks capsules, Maxman capsules, “Boobs Enlargement” pills, and Curvy Weight Gain supplements. Many items bore Chinese labels and lacked Nigerian registration marks or certificates. The agency noted that some stocks were past their expiry dates, posing health risks for consumers.
NAFDAC emphasized that before any product can be marketed in Nigeria, it must carry a valid Certificate of Registration. This ensures that regulatory standards for safety and quality are met. A spokesman for the agency explained that some of the products seized either never had registration or had their registration canceled or suspended. Those infractions warranted the wholesale closure of the offending outlets.
Officials said shops were given the chance to produce documents proving lawful importation and registration. Those who failed to comply were ordered to shut down immediately. The agency also warned that repeat violations would lead to stricter sanctions, including penalties and longer-term closure orders.
Consumers were urged to be vigilant. Before purchasing, they should insist on checking whether products — especially cosmetics, supplements, and drugs — carry NAFDAC numbers and registration details. The agency promised continued enforcement across the country, pledging to root out unregistered products and protect public health.
