At the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, the Super Eagles prepare for a match that could decide their World Cup fate. They must beat Benin Republic, and do so in commanding fashion if they hope to leapfrog their rival in Group C.
Heading into the final round of qualifiers, Benin leads the group with 17 points. South Africa sits second on 15, while Nigeria trails with 14. A win for Nigeria would force chaotic permutations, especially depending on how Rwanda fares against South Africa in Nelspruit.
For Nigeria, the stakes are steep. Having missed the 2022 World Cup, they cannot risk another absence. Coach Eric Chelle and his players know this is their chance for redemption. Veterans like William Troost-Ekong and Iwobi will try to guide the side, while attacker such as Victor Osimhen carry the weight of expectation.
But Nigeria will not have a full squad. Lookman is suspended, and full-backs Ola Aina and Bright Osayi-Samuel are sidelined through injury. Benin, too, suffer absences, Yohan Roche and Sessi D’Almeida cannot play due to suspension.
On paper, Benin holds the advantage. They have the upper hand going into this last game. But Nigeria’s resolve runs deep. The entire nation watches, every pass and shot carrying hope, dread, and expectation. A victory here along with favorable results elsewhere would send the Super Eagles back to the world’s greatest stage.
If they fail, the disappointment will be overwhelming.
