The Presidency has launched a sharp critique of former President Goodluck Jonathan, labeling his record in office as disastrous, even as it invites him to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election. The response comes after some political figures, including ex-minister Jerry Gana, began rallying support for Jonathan’s return to the presidency under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party. Premium Times confirms Jonathan has not yet declared his candidacy.
In a statement carried by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the presidency accused Jonathan’s time in office of lacking a clear economic agenda, engaging in frivolous spending, and leaving the country’s economy in ruin. Onanuga also raised doubts about Jonathan’s constitutional eligibility to seek a third term and said that Nigerians would judge whether he has anything new to offer.
The presidency defended President Tinubu’s performance, saying that under his leadership the economy has begun to rebound. According to the statement, key indicators have improved: inflation has fallen, foreign reserves have risen, and GDP growth has hit the highest in years. Infrastructure investments and security efforts were also cited as signs that the administration is turning the tide.
The government’s message closed with a clear signal: Jonathan is welcome to run again, but his past actions will not be forgotten. Nigerians, the statement said, will remember the years before 2015 when he held power and will decide whether his return is in their interest.
