Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, on Saturday declared open the Governor’s Golf Tournament in Calabar, describing the event as a new initiative to promote business networking, tourism and leisure in the state.
Speaking at the Calabar Golf Course, Governor Otu said the tournament would showcase the state’s natural beauty, encourage investment and strengthen relationships between the government and the private sector.
“This event is about more than just sport,” the governor said. “It is about creating a platform where business leaders, investors and public officials can meet, share ideas and build partnerships that will benefit the people of Cross River State.”
The Governor’s Golf Tournament attracted golfers and business executives from across the country, including representatives of major financial institutions and private sector partners.
Among the corporate participants was the Chief Executive Officer of First Bank Group, Mr. Olusegun Alebiosu, who commended the quality of the golf course and affirmed the bank’s commitment to supporting sports and development in Cross River.
“First Bank is proud to be here,” Mr. Alebiosu said. “We have been part of the Calabar business community for over 100 years and we will continue to support initiatives that promote economic growth and unity. Golf brings people together and opens doors for business.”
He added that First Bank has a long history of sponsoring sporting events across the country, including polo, football and basketball, and would sustain its support for the Calabar tournament.
The Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Michael Odere, who coordinated the event, explained that the tournament was conceived as part of the state’s effort to connect recreation with investment opportunities.
“What we are doing here is to show the world another side of Cross River,” Dr. Odere said. “The Calabar Golf Course is one of the finest in Nigeria. We want investors and visitors to see that the state is clean, green, safe and open for business. The tournament provides a relaxed environment where meaningful business conversations can happen.”
He noted that the event was also designed to help investors meet government officials directly and discuss opportunities for collaboration without the usual bureaucratic delays.
“We are using this platform to make access easier,” he said. “People can talk to commissioners, heads of agencies and decision-makers while enjoying the game.”
The Governor’s Golf Tournament marks part of the state government’s renewed effort to position Calabar as a preferred destination for sports tourism and investment.
